Where did you grow up? I grew up in Iowa, Nebraska and White Bear Lake, MN. When did you become a member of Mi5 Fitness? Late December of 2015. What do you do when you are not at Mi5? (occupation, hobbies, etc.) My wife Kathy and I are parents of 4 active boys so we spend a lot of time following them. I am also the Principal at Valley Middle School of STEM in Apple Valley, MN. How did you find out about Mi5? I made a decision last December to join a Crossfit gym after dabbling in it for a few years. After looking at MI-5's philosophy of coaching quality movement first, education, nutrition, strength, speed and metabolic conditioning, I decided to learn more about the gym and community. When/How did you realize CrossFit/Mi5 was the right fit for you? Almost from the start...I found the community of supportive and encouraging people that I was looking for and they even play "old guy weight room music" for me. What is your favorite WOD/movement? I ain't too bright but I can lift heavy things: squat, bench, deadlift, cleans, etc. What is your least favorite WOD/movement? There are a few movements I can't do yet, but the one that tears me up the most has to be bar facing burpees. What would your perfect WOD look like? Crossfit Total (1 RM of Press, Back Squat and Deadlift) or a 20 minute AMRAP of wings and beer. What is one thing you have been able to accomplish since starting at Mi5 that you never thought you'd be able to do? At a bodyweight of 285# I did not think I could climb a rope...I was surprised to find out I was wrong. What motivates you to stay fit? I could say it is about extending my quality of life, being a role model for my boys, reversing the aging process, etc. - but I really like working out like a badass. What is something about you that Mi5 members do not yet know? I have competed in a couple of triathlons and a couple of half marathons. What advice would you give to someone just getting started at Mi5? At first, leave a little in the tank after each WOD and be disciplined in your movement (form and technique). Fall in love with a foam roller and lacrosse ball.
